Vine & Climber Ideas: Clematis, Arbors & Vertical Color

When you run out of ground, garden up. Vines and climbers turn fences into flower walls, arbors into entrances, and mailbox posts into showpieces. Clematis is my ride-or-die — big dramatic blooms in purples, pinks, and whites that come back every year.

The trick is matching the vine to the support: clematis wants something thin to twine around, while heavier climbers need a real structure. Browse the photos, then plan your own vertical moment.

Clematis Close-Up

Linda's pro tip

Clematis likes its face in the sun and its feet in the shade. Plant a low perennial or lay a flat stone at the base to keep the roots cool — it'll bloom twice as hard.
