Concrete pavers vs. natural stone — decide first
Concrete pavers are uniform, budget-friendly and easy to lay; premium lines look remarkably like stone. Bluestone and flagstone are natural, one-of-a-kind and pricier, and irregular flagstone takes real patience to fit. Decide based on your look and your back before you shop.
Bring your square footage and your design
Length × width plus 5–10% for cuts. Suppliers price by the square foot or the pallet and will tell you exactly how many pallets, how much base gravel and how much sand — but only if you bring numbers. Your Backyard Buddy design photo helps them match the style.
Ask about the base package
A patio is 4–6 inches of compacted crushed stone, 1 inch of bedding sand, the pavers, then polymeric sand in the joints. Good suppliers quote the whole package. If they only quote pavers, ask why.
One dye lot, one order
Concrete paver colors vary between production runs. Order everything you need at once and ask that it come from one lot. Buying "a few more" next month is how you get a patch that never matches.
Ask what's discontinued
Suppliers clear out discontinued colors and broken pallets at deep discounts. My favorite bluestone terrace came from a half-price lot in the back — always ask.
